Traditional Finnish Sauna at Fagerholm Island

Sauna is not an activity at Fagerholm. It is a way of being.
Rooted in Finnish tradition and shaped by the surrounding sea and forest, the island’s three saunas offer distinct experiences that unfold naturally over the course of a stay. Together, they form a rhythm of heat, water, stillness, and connection.

Guests often refer to this as the island’s informal “sauna triathlon”.

Smoke sauna

A rare and deeply traditional experience, the smoke sauna is nestled between pine trees and exposed island bedrock. Heated slowly over several hours, the space carries a soft warmth and distinctive scent.

After the sauna, unwind on the terrace overlooking the Baltic Sea or sink into the outdoor wood-fired hot tub as the sun sets. With direct access to the sea, the transition from heat to cold is immediate and grounding. For many guests, this becomes one of the most memorable moments of their stay.

Traditional wood sauna

Located directly on the shoreline, this small red sauna offers “löyly” at its most authentic. Heated by fire and without running water, the experience is deliberately elemental. Buckets, ladles, and the nearby sea set the pace.

A cold plunge follows naturally, awakening the senses and sharpening the mind. The adjoining wood-fired hot tub invites longer conversations, stargazing, and quiet reflection, often with a cold drink in hand.

Indoor sauna

The indoor electric sauna offers a more contemporary counterpoint. The large window frames the sea and surrounding nature, while design-led details reference the island’s rock formations and coastal landscape.

Paired with rainforest showers and sauna scents, this space is often used for morning sessions or as a gentler introduction to Finnish sauna culture. It provides a calm, restorative start to the day or end to an evening, particularly during retreats and off-sites.

A shared ritual

All sauna facilities are within easy walking distance of the main house. For larger groups, certain sauna sessions may be staggered, with additional outdoor fire gatherings created so the group remains connected.

At Fagerholm, sauna is where hierarchy dissolves, conversations deepen, and the island’s quiet luxury is felt most clearly.
